Hiking Guide

Aloha! So you're looking for beautiful hikes on Maui? There are plenty to choose from. For and foremost please keep in mind and be cautious of any harsh weather conditions. Hazard signs and staying on the paths or trails is recommended for safety! Also watch out for “private property” and “no trespassing signs” and stay on marked trails.

West Maui

Kapalua Coastal Trail – Difficulty: Easy. Time from resort: Approximately 15 minute drive. Parking: Yes, limited. Loop: No. Terrain: Rocky trail/path, some uphill/downhill steps, some areas paved. Scenery: Ocean views, open air, coastal access. Great for sunsets. Shade/ Cover: None. Description: Great trail for ocean views, fresh air and sunset. Trailhead continues through Montage to Kapalua beach.

Honolua Bay – Difficulty: Easy. Time from resort: Approximately 25 minute drive. Parking: Yes, limited. Loop: No. Terrain: Dirt paths/trails, mostly smooth terrain. Small stream with rocks on part of the trail. Scenery: Lush forest, lots of trees. Shade/Cover: Ample. Description: Short, easy nature walk to coastal access of Honolua Bay. Serene, peaceful setting. There is no beach at Honolua Bay, however there is access to the bay.

Nakalele Point/Blowhole – Difficulty: Moderate. Time from resort: Approximately 45 mi- nute drive from resort. Parking: Yes. Loop: No. Terrain: Mostly Dirt trails with some areas with rocks, nice ocean views, view of the Blowhole. **BE EXTREMELY CAUTIOUS NEAR THE BLOWHOLE-IT IS VERY DANGEROUS!!! Some steep grades and high cliffs. Scenery: Ocean views with large cliffs, rocky cliff sides and mountain landscape. NO WATER ACCESS! Shade/ Cover: Very minimal/none. Description: Trail to blowhole as well as other trails along Na- kalele Point. The distance to the blowhole is not very far, however the trails do extend for longer hiking along the coastline areas.

Lahaina Pali Trail – Difficulty: Difficult/Strenuous. Time from resort: Approximately 30 mi- nute drive. Parking: Yes, limited. Loop: No. Terrain: Steep, rocky climb into hills behind Pali tunnel. Very steep inclines and declines with loose gravel on Eastern side of the trail.
Scenery: Hillside views, some ocean views, dry rocky climate, behind windmills along Pali. Scenery: Hillside views, some ocean views, dry rocky climate, behind windmills along Pali pass. Shade/ Cover: None. Description: Intense and long hike for the experienced and avid hikers only. Very hot and ex- posed trails with no shade, trail is 4.5 miles one way. Multiple vehicles needed for one way hike, or 9 miles round trip. Lots of rocks along parts of the trail. Not recommended for beginners.

Wailea Beach Walk path - Difficulty: Very Easy. Time from resort: Approximately 1 hour drive. Parking: Yes. Loop: No. Terrain: Paved pathway connecting Wailea resorts along coastline. Scenery: Coastal views, beautiful property views. Great for sunsets and beach access.

La Perouse Lava Fields - Difficulty: Moderate/Difficult. Time from resort: Approximately 1.5 hours. Park- ing: Yes, limited. (please note that the road leading to La Perouse is very rough and ends in dirt, rocky, and very uneven road and is not recommended for most vehicles. Please check with the rental car agency before driving.) Loop: No. Terrain: Uneven, rocky terrain with moderate inclines/declines. Scenery: Lava Fields, Rocky cliffs, Coastal views, Rock Formations. Shade/Cover: Limited. Description: Paths along lava rocks and sand area leading to rocky trails along coastline. Sweeping coastal views.

Upcountry Maui

Hosmer Grove – Difficulty: Moderate. Time from resort: Approximately 1.5 hours. Parking: Limited. Loop: Yes. Terrain: Moderate terrain with dirt trails, some rock portions. Scenery: Vista Views near Haleakala Crater, some forest and tree areas. Shade/Cover: Some, in parts. Description: Trail beginning near Haleaka- la Crater that runs down the side of Haleakala mountain and into a nice groove with campground. Long hike at high elevation.

Poli Poli Trail – Difficulty: Moderate. Time from resort: Approximately 2 hours. Parking: Limited (please note that the road to the trail head is very rough and windy, and not recommended for all vehicles. Please check with your car rental agency before going.) Loop: Yes. Terrain: Dirt trails with foliage, some incline/ declines. Scenery: Redwood trees, lots of greenery, vista views from high elevation. Shade/Cover: Yes. De- scription: Scenic loop with lots of dense green areas and redwood trees. Hike at high elevation.
